Earthle Earthing Double Set

Connecting, using and washing. Sorted in a couple of minutes.

Earthle Earthing Double Set

The double set contains a wide sleeping mat and two pillowcases, so you can both earth in the same bed. Below you will find how to connect everything, how to clean and wash it, and what to do if you have only one earthed socket beside the bed.

Connected in five steps

  1. Take the sleeping mat and the two pillowcases out of the packaging. Each part comes with its own earthing cable and plug.

  2. Lay the sleeping mat over your mattress and fix it with the elastic straps. The wide mat covers most of the bed, so you are both lying on it.

  3. Put your own pillows into the two cases, just like ordinary cases. They fit any standard pillow of 71 by 51 cm or smaller.

The pillow goes into the earthing case
  4. Click the earthing cables onto the press studs of the mat and the two cases. You will feel them lock into place.

  5. Put the plugs into an earthed socket. Only the earth contact is used, never the live wire. This works on earthed sockets across Europe.

The plug goes into an earthed socket

Thirty to forty minutes a day is enough. One night of sleep goes well past that, and more does no harm. That goes for both of you.

Only one socket beside the bed?

Three parts means three cables, and most bedrooms do not have three earthed sockets within reach. With the splitter you pair two of them on one connection.

Two products share that earth point without weakening each other: you earth just as well with both as with a single product connected on its own.

If the earthed socket is a room away, the fifteen metre extension cable covers that distance.

Good to know

Something may go over the top. Choose cotton, linen or wool. Natural fabric takes up moisture, and through that moisture the contact with your skin stays. Polyester and other synthetics do the opposite: they insulate, and then nothing happens at all. Handy if the mat feels cool, because faux leather feels cooler than cotton.

Only one of you wants to earth? Then you can also lay the mat crosswise over the bed, at chest height. You earth through your upper body and not through your feet, so it works just as well.

Building up slowly is fine. If you are sensitive, you may feel a light tingling the first few nights or sleep differently than usual. Start with an hour or two, or put an extra layer in between at first and take it away later. There is more about this in what you can feel and expect and in earthing for beginners.

Washing and care

The pillowcases are 95% organic cotton and 5% conductive silver thread. Wash them at 40 degrees in the machine, as often as you like. If there are stains, an occasional wash at 60 is fine. Use no bleach and no fabric softener: they settle on the silver thread and make it less conductive.

The sleeping mat is vegan faux leather and cannot go in the washing machine. Wipe it with a damp cloth and a mild, natural soap well diluted with water. Use no scouring agent, because that attacks the conductive top layer.

No earthed socket?

An earthed socket has metal pins at the top and bottom as well as the two holes. If you cannot see those, the socket is not earthed.

If there is none in the house, there are two other ways. With the earthing pin you push the earth point into the ground outside and bring it in on fifteen metres of cable. With the alligator clip you clamp it onto an unpainted heating pipe or radiator. Both are explained in earthing without an earthed socket.

Why there is a resistor in the plug

Inside the plug sits a 100,000 ohm resistor, between the earth contact of the socket and your product. It is there in case a socket was ever wired incorrectly.

Earthing works by equalising voltage, and that takes almost no current. A hundred thousand ohms does not get in the way of that: it conducts more than well enough. The resistor only limits what could flow in the worst case.

The live wire of the socket is never used. So no current can run through your product.

Check it yourself with a multimeter

If you want to be sure the connection is sound, you can measure it. Take the plug out of the socket first: you are measuring the product itself, not the mains.

  1. Set the multimeter to resistance, 200 kΩ range.
  2. Hold one probe on the conductive surface of your product, or on the press stud where the cable clicks on.
  3. Hold the other probe on the round earth pin of the plug.

You should read around 100 kΩ. That is the built-in resistor, and it means the whole chain is unbroken.

If it reads infinite or OL, a connection is missing somewhere: check that the cable is properly clicked on. If it reads close to zero, the resistor is missing, and we would like to hear about that.
