Grounding while you sleep: what does the new research show?

A double-blind 2025 study found more total sleep time among participants using an active earthing mat. Together with earlier sleep research, this makes grounded sleep an appealing routine to try.

People who want to sleep better usually look for a routine that is comfortable, simple and measurable. Grounded sleep fits that brief: the electrical connection is easy to check and several sleep studies report positive findings. The double-blind 2025 trial is especially notable for its result on total sleep time.

What the 2025 sleep trial tested

Researchers computer-randomised 60 participants to an active earthing mat or an identical sham mat. Fifty-six participants were included in the analysis. They used their mat for at least six hours a day over 31 days. Sleep was measured with questionnaires and an actigraph, a wrist sensor that estimates movement and sleep time.

After 31 days, actigraphy showed a greater increase in total sleep time in the grounded group than in the control group. Sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, perceived stress and insomnia-severity scores also improved within the grounded group. Combining an objective sleep measure with a more positive experience makes this a relevant finding.

The objectively measured difference in total sleep time is encouraging. It gives grounded sleep a serious wellness rationale and a clear basis for larger follow-up trials.

What earlier sleep studies found

Earlier research fits the same positive pattern. A 2004 sleep study reported favourable changes in night-time cortisol and in perceived sleep, pain and stress. In 2022, participants with mild Alzheimer's disease recorded improvements in sleep quality and sleep duration.

Why a grounding sheet fits naturally into your evening

Sleep creates hours of consistent contact without taking time from the day. An Earthle grounding sheet or sleep mat therefore works quietly in the background: once it is connected correctly, you only need comfortable skin contact.

Persistent insomnia, loud snoring with pauses in breathing or severe daytime sleepiness deserve medical assessment. A grounding product does not replace diagnosis, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia or another treatment.

Give grounded sleep a fair two-week trial

  1. Keep bedtime, caffeine, alcohol and evening screen use as stable as possible.
  2. Each morning record sleep onset, awakenings, estimated sleep time and how rested you feel.
  3. Check that the protective earth and product actually conduct before you start.
  4. After fourteen nights compare averages, not only your best or worst night.
  5. Review the fourteen-night average. A calmer morning, longer estimated sleep time or fewer awakenings are useful signals to track.

Which Earthle product fits this use

An Earthing Sheet, Fitted Sheet or Sleeping Mat gives the longest contact time at night. A Pillowcase is the smallest entry point; a Duvet Cover or Blanket grounds from above. Direct skin contact is the most reliable, although one thin clean cotton sheet can sit between you and the product when the setup is measured.
