Grounding General
What is grounding/earthing?
The earth acts as a massive source of negatively charged free electrons. Without direct contact with the earth, our body cells cannot sufficiently balance the positive charge. By earthing, you ensure that your body's electrical voltage remains balanced, which is essential for the proper functioning of your organs, senses, and cells. Nowadays, we often wear shoes with rubber or plastic soles that do not conduct electricity. As a result, we rarely have direct contact with the earth, affecting our physical and energetic well-being. Earthle offers modern grounding products that you simply plug into a grounded outlet. Just 30 to 40 minutes a day of contact with these products is enough to support your body's self-healing ability. Want to go deeper? What earthing is and what it does to you tells the whole story. Just starting out? Earthing for beginners walks through what you need to know, step by step.
How does grounding work?
You connect earthing products to the earth contact of an earthed socket in your home. The socket does not need to be switched on, because only the earth pin is used to pass on the energy of the earth, without any current running through it. That is how you bring the connection with the earth from outside to inside.
No earthed socket? It still works, in two ways. With the crocodile clip on a bare heating pipe or radiator, because the heating system is connected to the earth through the building. Or with the earthing pin, which you push into the soil outside and bring indoors with fifteen metres of cable. If you live in a flat or on a floor without a garden, the clip is usually the easier of the two.
How that connection runs exactly is explained in what earthing is and what it does. Why current can never run through your product is covered in earthing: safe and effective. And if you want to fit it into your day, ten ways to earth yourself in your daily routine gives you a few ideas.
What are the health benefits of grounding?
Earthing has been studied over the past twenty years in a series of studies published in scientific journals. Those studies keep pointing the same way.
What researchers measure:
- cortisol drops at night and the daily curve returns to its natural shape
- red blood cells clump together less and the blood flows more easily
- circulation in the skin and face improves
- mood improves, even when participants do not know whether they are earthed
- the voltage on the skin disappears, from 415 down to 19 millivolts
That is not assumed, it is measured. Our blog on the literature lists the studies by name, year and number of participants so you can read them yourself.
Earthle does not sell medical devices and does not replace treatment.
Is there scientific evidence for the effects of grounding?
Yes. Earthing has been studied and published in scientific journals. The studies are small, so we state the number of participants each time.
- Ghaly and Teplitz (2004) had twelve people sleep earthed for eight weeks. Their cortisol dropped at night and the release returned to the natural 24-hour rhythm. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine
- Chevalier et al. (2013) measured, in ten participants after two hours of earthing, an average 2.7 times higher charge on the red blood cells, which makes them clump together less. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine
- Chevalier (2015) had forty people sit for an hour, half earthed and half sham-earthed, with nobody knowing who had what. Only in the genuinely earthed group did mood improve significantly. Psychological Reports
- Passi et al. (2017) saw the voltage on the skin of twenty-six preterm infants fall from 415 to 19 millivolts, and vagal tone rise by 67 per cent. Neonatology
Our blog on the literature goes through the research point by point, with references to the original publications.
Is earthing nonsense, or just placebo?
A fair question, and we are not the most independent party to answer it. So here is the whole picture, weak spots included.
The electrical side is not in dispute. Your product makes a connection to earth, and the voltage your body picks up indoors falls away because of it. You can check that with a twenty euro multimeter, yourself.
What that means for your health in the long run is a good deal less solid. The research that exists points the same way, but it is small, comes largely from one corner, and was partly funded by companies that sell these products. Anyone who says the evidence is thin is reading the literature correctly.
Placebo certainly plays a part in sleep and rest. It just does not explain why a voltmeter reads a different number, and it does not explain why premature babies responded in a study.
The full story, including where this market genuinely does cheat people, is in is earthing nonsense?
Does earthing protect against electromagnetic radiation?
Partly, and probably not in the way you mean.
Earthing lowers the voltage that the electric field from your wiring, your lamps and your chargers puts on your body. That voltage drops by a factor of twenty to ninety as soon as you are connected. That is measurable and that is real.
What it does not do is shield you from wireless signals. Wi-Fi, 5G, a phone mast: earthing changes nothing there. An earthing sheet is not a Faraday cage, and we do not sell it as one.
Why that difference exists, and how to measure it yourself, is explained in earthing and EMF: what it does and what it does not.
How quickly will I feel results?
Many people notice a difference after one or two nights; for others it takes a little longer. 30 to 40 minutes of contact with the earthing products a day is enough to get the process going. There is no such thing as too much earthing.
Read more about what you can expect in our blog.
What if I feel too much from earthing?
A small proportion of people find the first few nights restless, or lie awake when they normally would not. The fix is simple: build up rather than going straight to a full night.
Start with twenty minutes, feet on a mat, and extend that over a week or two. If you sleep on a sheet or a sleeping mat, put an ordinary fitted sheet over it. That dampens the contact without removing it, and you can take it off again later if you want to. If you find the mat cool to the touch, that same fitted sheet solves it too.
There is more on this in our blog about what you can feel and expect.
What if I don't feel anything from grounding?
Feeling nothing is perfectly normal, especially at the start. Feeling it is not a condition either: contact with the earth is either there or it is not, and you do not always notice that in your body. Our blog about what you can feel and expect sets out what research has and has not measured.
Do run through these three things, because that is usually where it sits:
- Is the plug in an earthed socket, and not in an extension lead without earth?
- Does your skin touch the surface? Through a thick duvet or a thick mattress protector, little happens.
- Does your product still conduct? Check it with a multimeter; the manual explains how.
If all of that is right, give it a few weeks. Some people notice a difference after one night, others never feel anything, and on its own that says nothing about whether the connection is there.
Are there any negative effects of grounding?
Grounding with our earthing products has the same effect as making barefoot contact with the earth outdoors. Just as walking barefoot outside is not harmful, neither is grounding. No current flows through the cable either: the plug uses only the earth pin and contains a 100,000 ohm resistor.
A small proportion of people do notice their body reacting during the first few nights, for instance by sleeping less settled. That almost always passes by itself. If it feels like too much, build up gradually: start with twenty minutes with your feet on a mat, or put an ordinary fitted sheet over your earthing product to dampen the contact.
If you take blood thinners or thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before you start, and never change your dose yourself.
Read more about the safety of grounding in our blog.
Is direct skin contact with the grounding products necessary?
No. Direct skin contact conducts best, but a layer in between is perfectly fine. Pyjamas, an ordinary fitted sheet over the sheet or the sleeping mat, or a duvet cover: it still conducts, because your skin always gives off a little moisture.
There are good reasons to use such a layer:
- Comfort. The vegan leather of a sleeping mat can feel cool. A fitted sheet over it takes that away.
- Hygiene. You perspire at night. An ordinary fitted sheet or duvet cover is easier to wash, and washed more often, than the earthing product itself, so the product stays in good condition longer.
- Building up gently. If you notice too much during the first few nights, an extra layer dampens the contact without removing it. You can simply take it off again later if you want.
The effect does drop as the fabric gets thicker and drier. Through a thin cotton sheet or pyjamas it works fine; through a thick fleece blanket, very little happens. To get the most out of it, put your bare feet, forearms or back directly on the surface.
Can I earth with a pacemaker or another implant?
We cannot judge that for you. Our products supply no current and use only the earth connection of the socket, but with a pacemaker, ICD or other active implant your own clinician is the only one who can say. Ask your cardiologist or doctor before you start.
Can I earth during pregnancy?
Earthing amounts to the same thing as standing barefoot on the grass, and there is nothing objectionable about that. Even so, we are not doctors. If you are unsure, or if there is a medical reason to be careful, run it past your midwife or doctor.
Can I earth if I take medication?
Usually yes. There are two groups where it is wise to check first: blood thinners and thyroid medication. Research has described that earthing can affect blood flow and the thyroid, so a dose may need adjusting.
If you take medication like that, discuss it with your doctor before you start. Never change your own dose.
Which product suits me?
They all earth equally well. The difference is in how they fit into your life.
- Pillowcase: the smallest step. Contact through your head and neck, nothing about your bed changes.
- Sheet: lies loose on the mattress and does not have to fit exactly. With sheet clips it stays put.
- Fitted sheet: pulled tight around the mattress, so the size matters. Never slides.
- Duvet cover: earths from above while you lie underneath. Handy if you do not want to change anything about your mattress.
- Blanket: for the daytime, on the sofa or over your legs.
- Sleeping mat: vegan leather, never needs washing and stays put with the straps.
- Desk mat and yoga mat: for the hours you sit or move.
Cotton breathes better but needs washing more often; vegan leather only needs a damp cloth. If you are unsure, start small and expand later with the splitter.
All seven side by side, with the drawbacks stated honestly, is in which earthing product suits you.
Can the two of us earth in one bed?
Yes. You can do it with a wide sheet, a wide fitted sheet or the wide sleeping mat that you both lie on. Or with a pillowcase each.
If you have only one earthed socket beside the bed, the splitter pairs two products on the same point. They do not weaken each other. The double set has it all together.
Only one of you wants to earth? Then take the narrow size of the sheet or the sleeping mat and put it on your own half of the bed.
A narrow size also helps when your mattress is an unusual size and nothing fits exactly. You do not need to cover the whole mattress to make contact; at chest height is enough. If you sleep alone, you can lay the narrow sheet or mat crosswise over the bed.
Is there a resistor inside, and how do I check it?
Yes. Inside the plug sits a 100,000 ohm resistor, between the earth contact of the socket and your product. It is there in case a socket was ever wired incorrectly. The live wire is never used, so no current can run through your sheet or your mat.
Earthing works by equalising voltage, and that takes almost no current. A hundred thousand ohms does not get in the way of that.
Every product is measured before it is shipped. If you want to check it yourself: take the plug out of the socket, set your multimeter to resistance on the 200 kΩ range, hold one probe on the conductive surface or the press stud and the other on the round earth pin of the plug. You should read around 100 kΩ. If it reads infinite or OL, the cable is not clicked on properly. The manual for your product explains it step by step.
What else to look for in an earthing product, including when you buy elsewhere, is in what to look for in an earthing product.
Do the earthing products run on electricity?
No, our products work through the grounding connection of the outlet, not on power. It doesn't matter what the voltage of the outlet is, as long as the outlet is grounded.
How do I know if my outlet is grounded?
A grounded outlet has metal pins at the top and bottom in addition to the two holes. An ungrounded outlet only has two holes. See below for an image of a grounded and an ungrounded outlet.

Do the earthing products also work on grounded outlets in Belgium, France, and Denmark?
Yes. Our earthing products work with any earthed socket, including in Belgium, France and Denmark.
Belgium and France use a socket with an earthing pin instead of the two metal strips you see in the Netherlands. Our plug simply fits into it. Below you can see an earthed and an unearthed Belgian socket.
Ordering from Denmark? Danish sockets have the earth connection in a different place. That is why we include a matching adapter with every Danish order. So you do not have to buy anything extra and can get started right away.

What if the grounded outlet is too far away?
Then you bridge the distance with our 15 metre extension cable. You click it between your product and the existing cable; nothing changes about how it works. The cable is thin and flexible, so you can run it along the skirting board, under a door or behind a cupboard.
Fifteen metres reaches the hallway, the living room or the meter cupboard. You can also use the cable behind the earthing pin or the crocodile clip.
An ordinary earthed extension lead from the hardware shop works too, as long as it really is earthed. Ours is simply a lot thinner and made to disappear out of sight.
Can I ground without a grounded outlet?
Yes. Use our grounding rod, which you push into open ground outside. The fifteen metre cable brings the earth connection indoors. If you live on an upper floor, you lower the cable from your window; it is thin enough to close the window on it.
No open ground anywhere, because there is only paving below your window? Then use our crocodile clamp. You fit it onto a bare heating pipe or radiator, because the heating system is connected to earth through the building. A planter or balcony box does not count: it stands apart from the earth.
Read more about grounding without an earthed socket in our blog.
Can I earth in a flat without a garden?
Yes. If you have an earthed socket, nothing changes: it works the same in a flat as in a house.
If you don't, the crocodile clip is the simplest solution. You clip it onto a bare heating pipe or radiator, which is connected to earth through the installation.
If there is green ground below your window, the earthing rod works too. It comes with fifteen metres of cable, enough to lower it from a first or second floor window and push it into the ground. The cable is thin enough that you can close the window on it. What doesn't work is a planter or a balcony box: it sits apart from the earth, however real the soil in it may be.

Product and returns
How was Earthle created?
Earthle was born out of a love for nature. What could be better than walking barefoot on grass or sand? Unfortunately, this is not always possible due to factors like the weather or our living environment. That's why we've developed high-quality grounding products, so you can connect with the earth at home.
What are the grounding products made of?
The textile is 95 percent organic cotton with 5 percent silver thread woven through: the pillowcase, the flat sheet, the fitted sheet and the duvet cover. The silver sits inside as a grid rather than as a layer on top, and you can see that check pattern in the fabric.
The sleeping mat, desk mat and yoga mat are vegan leather, made conductive with carbon, with TPE or rubber as the backing underneath. The blanket has polyester with cotton on the outside and silver on the inside.
The cotton is organic cotton from India and is traceable down to the state through a transaction certificate from Control Union. The fabric was tested by SGS in September 2025 for formaldehyde, azo dyes and twelve extractable heavy metals among other things; all stayed below the detection limit.
The full list per product, with the origin and the test reports, is in what our grounding products are made of.
How do I clean the earthing products?
- Cotton with silver thread, so the sheet, the fitted sheet, the duvet cover, the pillowcase and the blanket: machine wash at 40 degrees, and at 60 now and then for stains. No bleach and no fabric softener; the latter leaves a film on the silver thread and costs you conductivity. Line dry or tumble on a low setting.
- The mats, so the sleeping mat, the desk mat and the yoga mat: these are vegan leather and never need washing. A damp cloth is enough, with a little diluted mild soap if needed. Do not submerge and do not machine wash.
- The connection, so the cable, the plug, the splitter, the alligator clip and the earthing rod: wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Unplug first. The rod is allowed to get dirty; it belongs in the ground.
- The sheet fasteners can simply go in the wash with your bedding.
Want to wash less often? Put an ordinary fitted sheet over the earthing product, or use an ordinary duvet cover over it. That catches the perspiration, is easier to wash, and the grounding works straight through it.
Why fabric softener makes the silver thread useless, and how to check with a multimeter whether your product still conducts, is set out step by step in washing your earthing sheet.
How long do the products last?
The cotton itself lasts for years. What wears out is the silver thread: with normal use and washing, a sheet or pillowcase lasts about two to three years before conductivity noticeably drops.
Washing at 40 degrees without bleach and without fabric softener makes the biggest difference there. Fabric softener settles on the silver thread and speeds up the wear. The vegan leather mats last longer, because they never need washing.
If you want to extend the life, put an ordinary fitted sheet or duvet cover over your earthing product. Then it needs washing less often itself, and the grounding works straight through it.
If you want to know whether your product still conducts well, check it with a multimeter. The manual for your product explains how. How to keep it in good shape for as long as possible is in washing your earthing sheet.
Can I return my order?
Yes, within thirty days of receiving it, without having to give a reason. You may try the product out during that time the way you would in a shop, so the packaging does not have to stay unopened.
We do ask you to freshen it up before it goes out: textiles go in the wash at 40 degrees, mats get wiped with a damp cloth. Then back into the original packaging, with the cable and the plug, so it looks like new again. The shipping box around it may be a different one.
Register your return through the returns portal. You arrange the return yourself, with whichever carrier suits you; that cost is yours. If you would rather not, we will sort out a return label and deduct its cost from your refund. As soon as your return arrives, you get the full purchase amount back, including the shipping costs you paid on your order. It is all set out in our refund policy.
What can I do if I received a damaged product?
Contact our customer service as soon as you can, with a description and a photo of the damage. We will sort it out quickly, with a replacement or a refund. You do not need to wash it in that case, and the shipping costs are ours.
What if I am not satisfied with my order?
We stand behind the quality of our products. If for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase, please feel free to contact us. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Only when you are satisfied, are we satisfied. 100% satisfaction guarantee for risk-free online shopping!
